Dream of writing a book but haven’t found the right topic?

Author Lui D’Amato describes how life experience often provides the best material

Why did you decide to write Move Over, Rover?

I wrote what I saw happening in my own life. It became a recording of the changes in our growing family unfolding before my eyes.

What is the message the book conveys and why is it important?

The message is that our animals are part of our family and sometimes we forget because they can’t talk and ask for things. They understand what’s going on better than we do. They are there when our kids grow up and we need to be there for them.

What do you hope people will gain from the book?

I hope it will pull on their heartstrings and bring a familiarity that they themselves haven’t put into words. Many people don’t sit and go, “Wow, that part of my life was a lot of work with raising a puppy, then kids, and all of life’s other responsibilities. It’s a recurring familiar situation in many people’s lives.”

How do you feel about being an author?

It’s actually exciting when I think about it. It’s one secret I can’t wait to tell people about! People are taken aback because everyone secretly wants to write a book. I’m the guy that did it! It takes time. It’s a process, but it’s worth it!

What would you say to anyone thinking about writing a book?

Follow your heart. I wrote this book from my heart. It fell into my lap. Take notes, find the right people to help you. It’s a fun journey— go for it!

Do you have more books in the works?

Yes, two more. One completed but not edited, and one three-quarters of the way through—about my dog and what he taught me.
